FAQ

What’s a Yarn Base?

Base, or yarn base, is the type of yarn weight (or thickness) and fiber content that makes up the yarn.

Types of Yarn Bases:

Our Sock Stuff yarn is fingering weight, which is made up of 75% Superwash Merino Wool and 25% Nylon. The nylon gives the yarn extra strength for socks.

Use for: socks, shawls, hats, mittens, cowls, light weight sweaters, or T-shirts. The most popular base for all projects.

Our Plumpy Stuff sock yarn is also fingering weight, which is made up of 80% Superwash Merino Wool and 20% Nylon. The nylon gives it a little extra strength. This yarn is another sock yarn but it's a bit plumper because there's more wool in the base.

Use for: socks, shawls, hats, mittens, cowls light weight sweaters, T-shirts. This is another popular base for all projects

Our Fingering Stuff yarn is fingering weight, which is made up of100% Superwash Merino Wool.

Use for: shawls, hats, mittens, cowls, sweaters, or T-shirts.

Our Mohair Stuff yarn is lace weight, which is made up of 72% Superkid Mohair and 28% Mulberry Silk Yarn. Because this yarn weight is so delicate, it's best to hold this yarn with another weight to give it structure. Mohair yarn is brushed and gives projects a fuzzy, halo look. This yarn makes projects a little warmer and softer.

Use for: shawls, hats, cowls, or sweaters.

Our Fluff Stuff yarn is lace weight, which is made up of 74% Baby Suri Alpaca and 26% Silk Yarn. This yarn is very similar to mohair, so it is best to hold this yarn with another weight to give it structure. Fluff Stuff is different than Mohair Stuff because it is Suri Silk yarn. Suri Silk yarn is brushed, so it also gives projects a fuzzy, halo look. This yarn makes projects a little warmer and softer. It's a nice alternative to mohair and can replace mohair in patterns. We think it's softer than mohair.

Use for: shawls, hats, cowls, or sweaters.

Our DK Stuff yarn is DK (double knitting) weight, which is thicker than fingering weight. This yarn is made up of 100% Superwash Merino Wool.

Use for: shawls, hats, sweaters, thicker socks, mittens, or cowls.

Our DK Boucle Stuff yarn is also DK weight and made up of 100% Superwash Merino Wool. "Boucle" means "to curl." This yarn is held with one strand with very little tension than the other strands to create the curl texture while being plied.

Used for: squishier projects like hats, sweaters, or shawls.

Our Worsted Stuff yarn is worsted weight, which is made up of 100% Superwash Merino Wool.

Used for: warmer, thicker projects like hats, mittens, sweaters, cowls, or scarves.

Our Worsted OG Stuff yarn (organic) is also worsted weight and is made up of 100% Superwash Organic Merino Wool . This yarn is very soft and has a floppy drape.

Used for: warmer, thicker projects like hats, mittens, sweaters, cowls, or scarves.

Our Bulky Stuff yarn is bulky weight, which is made up of 100% Superwash Merino Wool. This is our thickest yarn and is thicker than worsted.

Use for: hats, gloves, sweaters, scarves, or shrugs.

What is yarn weight?

The weight of the yarn is the yarn thickness. For example, sock weight is very thin yarn. Bulky weight is thick yarn.

What is the difference between Sock Yarn and Fingering Yarn?

Sock Yarn and Fingering yarn are the same weight/thickness. Our sock yarn has a blend of wool and nylon. Our fingering yarn is 100% merino wool or other animal fibers.

How to care for hand-dyed yarn?

Most of our yarns are Superwash, which means you can wash them in the washing machine. We suggest hand washing your finished projects in our yarn for longevity. Always air dry.

5 easy steps for how to care for your hand-dyed yarn & project:

  1. Fill up the sink (basin, bucket or whatever you have) with cold water
  2. Add a small squirt of wool wash soap
  3. Place garment in the water & let soak for 20 minutes
  4. Do not wring out the water. Instead, lay out a towel and place your garment on the towel. Roll the towel with the garment while pressing down to help soak up the water.
  5. Lay flat to dry

What is hand-dyed yarn?

Hand-dyed yarn is is just that – Yarn we dye buy hand! This means that each skein of yarn is unique, and can very slightly in color in the same batch. We try to keep colors and skeins as consistent as possible but they all might vary slightly.

When knitting with semi-solids, we recommend alternating between 2 skeins.

Why does my yarn look different in-person?

We try our best to represent the colors in photos the best we can but screens can vary from phones, tablets to computers.
